Name: Noah Chochinov
Subject : Music
Rationale: To broaden student's musical knowledge, interest and passion
Prescribed Learning Outcome(s):
Students will find connections between popular music today and musical legends of the past and learn to play a tune from one the bands they learnt about
Instructional Objective(s):
Create informative and entertaining presentation about a popular band from the past
Define characteristics of different musical genres , and more specifically different bands within those genres. Find out what impact a band had on pop culture back then and today, and learn one song and perform it for the class as part of a broader presentation educating the class about a specific band.
Prerequisite Concepts and Skills:
Must be fairly comfortable and competent with their instrument
Materials and Resources:
Teacher:
- Music room will provide instruments, music stands etc.
- speakers/ipod for class to listen to music
- Computers for research
- Poster Paper
- Projector for powerpoint
Lesson Activities:
Teacher:
- Ask students about what type of music they listen to
- How did they find this music? What is it that resonates with them?
- Give brief overview of different bands from different decades, introduce students to their music by playing a track or two from different bands.
- Give an example presentation of a band that I admire such as the Beatles
- Share relevant information about their music from songwriting, to recording techniques, to the base they gave for basically all pop music today. This will give students better understanding of what is expected from their presentations
- Choose a definitive list of bands from the past that had a strong impact on music and pop culture
assign students to a specific band
Students:
- Listen to a bunch of different songs/bands and choose which they would like to learn about
- Choose song to learn and perform with their group
- Assign members of their group different topics to research concerning their band and the era in which they were popular
- put together a cohesive presentation introducing the rest of the class to the band being studied, the impact the band had on pop culture and music of today, as well as perform the song of their choice for the class
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and Differentiated Instruction (DI):
- The groups are made by the teacher, so they would be equal in terms of musical proficiency and any exceptional student will have people around them able and willing to help them out.
- Each student will have the opportunity to see the grading rubric for the final presentation which will allow for complete clarity concerning what is expected of each student
- Teacher will give example presentation at the end of the lesson to further demonstrate what is expected from students final presentation
Organizational Strategies:
- Teacher creates the groups
Show each group the grading rubric so they have a from grasp on what is expected from their group presentation
Sign up sheet for lunch hour use of the music room - time for groups to rehearse together
Behavioural Management Strategies:
Students are marked based on group performance not individual performance, knowing this will encourage students to stay on task because lack of focus would be a detriment to others’ grades.
Assessment and Evaluation:
- Use the aforementioned rubric that each group has been given a copy of
Two students chosen at random and myself will all evaluate the student presentations.
Average of all three of our evaluations will be groups final mark
Presentation marks based on:
Clarity of information presented about specific band
Creativity of delivery of said information
Relevance of research
Quality of musical performance (did students know their parts well, did they play cohesively etc.)
