Adapted Lesson Plan Grade 6 and 7 Geography

Date: April 10th 2014

Name: Jay Fernando

Subject: Geography

Grade(s): 6-7

Goal: The goal for this lesson is to educate and teach the class the different continents that exist on our planet.

Prescribed Learning Outcome(s): Students will be able to present and illustrate the knowledge they have gained from the different continents on our planet. Students will demonstrate the similarities and differences between North America and the rest of the continents

Instructional Outcome(s): Students will be working in groups and each group will be assigned a different continent. Students will learn the different weather, food, transportation and culture that each continent posses. Each group will present their own continent to the class educating everyone else.

Prerequisite Concepts: Students should have a general knowledge of the different continents that exist on our planet after reading the textbook. This project will further expand their knowledge

Material: Teacher will provide the following:
-       Choice of either power point or poster
-       Poster paper
-       Markers and other utensils
-       Class time, booking the computer lab for groups to work

Material: Students
-       Attend class
-       Using the internet and textbooks for information

Lesson Plan:

This lesson is adapted for children who are hard of hearing or deaf.

The class will be seated in their desks as we go through the textbook together highlighting the different continents. I would ask the class if there are any volunteers that would like to read sections of the textbook that briefly explains each continent. I then would like to generate a class discussion by ask basic questions like:

-       “Which continents are located in the southern hemisphere”  “Which continents are located in the northern hemisphere”
-       “What is the main crop that these continents harvest”
-       “What is the main transportation used”
-       “Which continent would you like to live in and why”
-       UDL: Make sure students who are hard of hearing or deaf at seated near the front of the classroom. It will be easier for them to hear and understand. I would also give a handout with those questions, or have them written down on the board. This will not only benefit the students that are hard of hearing or deaf, but everyone in the classroom.

Identifications: Having a poster of the world and showing my class where each continent is will help them understand visually, also getting an EA to take a little bit of time to work with students of hard hearing or that are deaf to make sure they understand the concept (UDL).

Poster Project: Assign groups of 3 or 4. Each group will be given a continent. On this project their objective is to find what the weather is like, what kind of transportation is used, what kind of foods they eat, what kind of forestry is in the continent, and any other interesting facts.

UDL: Handing out an instruction sheet to all of the students of what is expected and explain each learning outcome. All students will benefit from this. Putting students of hard hearing or deaf in a group with students that are willing to help, caring and have a positive attitude will be of assistance to those students. Students that are hard of hearing or deaf do not have to present if they do not want to and this will not go against their mark.

Time: It should take about 20-30 minutes for students to brainstorm what roles they want to do for their poster and also to figure out if they will be doing a poster or a power point. I will give roughly 3-4 classes for this project to be completed.

Organizational Strategies: Students will be working in groups to complete their project. Multiple classes will be given to ensure each group will be competed and that each poster is done to the best of their ability

Assessment and Evaluation: During discussions, the teacher will assess students’ effort and participation during the class discussion. The teacher will be able to assess the knowledge gained from textbook reading and other materials. During group work, the teacher will assess how well students’ work with one another and who is staying on task. The teacher will be of assistance but will be observing mostly. During presentations, teachers will assess how well students organize their project and what effort they have put in and how well they have worked together as a group. Posters and power points will be grades through a rubric. The final project will demonstrate students’ knowledge about their continent.
Behaviour Management: Students will only be called upon if their hand is raised during discussion. They also will have to use inside voices and will have to cooperate with one another. It is also up to the teacher to decide of the groups so students will not be distracted by on another.

Reflection: If students are stuck with information having them think back to their everyday will hopefully trigger their thinking, or asking them simpler questions to generate discussion.
